Hello friends. I've been sadly absent these past months. Not only have we had some changes in In Plain View Winnipeg, but I have had the most frustrating changes to my e-mail program.

The members of In Plain View Winnipeg have opted to forgo a spring  tour this year, and concentrate on more localized  events.

On the other hand, my e-mail program decided all on its own to rebel (in fact, it engaged in what I consider to be a wholesale uprising!), and began by degrees to decimate my contacts lists and also all my mail folders, necessitating the need to transfer data bit by onerous bit to a gmail program.
So This is reaching you from my new gmail address. You can reply in kind or email me at my usual address: j.kelly@shaw.ca.
I mention this because I have accessed all my contact groups rather willy-nilly, trying to resurrect the e-mail groups that I have used in the past to send out posts to this blog.
If you recieve this post, and don't have a clue as to why, and don't want it, please indicate this by return e-mail. I will try to sort out all requests as quickly as I can.

Kevin Friedrich was born in Meadowlake Saskatchewan and attended his first 2 years of art school at Red Deer College before completing his BFA in painting at the U of M and making his permanent home in Winnipeg. Kevin’s work has been described as ‘Prairie Surrealism’ and includes an evolving repertoire of personal symbols and styles. Through many stylistic avenues, such as folk and absurdist, his paintings give rise to charismatically inconclusive statements that are engaging and highly thought provoking.

CULTURE IN PLAIN VIEW

In two weeks - from Sept. 30th to Oct. 2nd - all Canada will be celebrating Culture Days - a nation-wide celebration of the Arts.This is what it's all about here in Manitoba:
 Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.
When is it? The last weekend of every September.
What is it? Three days of free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind the scenes,” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in their community.
Why? To showcase the arts in Manitoba and inspire more support and participation throughout the rest of the year. It is also a great opportunity for artists and arts groups to get exposure through our intense communications and public relations campaign and through our media partners.

Artists In Plain View Within 100 Miles

We’ve all heard about the hundred mile challenge. Folks restrict their diet, to include only foods grown within 100 miles of their residence. This incentive has grown legs and has become a continent-wide food movement – endorsed by  foodies everywhere who have pledged to help save the environment by restricting their diets to locally grown foods, thus fighting against pollution and global warming caused by its transport, and against corporate agribusiness over family farms.

Well - In Plain View Winnipeg is raising its own 100 mile challenge. It makes just as much sense to restrict your gift, craft and art buying to the work of local artists. 

Too often have local artists had to persuade local buyers that their work can have as much merit, value and creativity as anything coming out of Toronto, New York or Beijing.

So support your local artists. Help them survive in an ever-worsening economic era.

The Phoenix In Plain View

 

Enjoying our wonderful, sadly brief summer outdoors on my deck, I watched butterflies cavorting. I think they were Painted Ladies. Probably also Painted Gentlemen, because there seemed to be some courting going on.

They seemed attracted, in addition to one another, to the blooming flowers on my rejuvenated basswood tree.

I've mentioned this tree before - it has a place of honour in my backyard and in my life. Once a gorgeous  tall spreading wonder, it met with ill fate a few years ago in the shape of a windstorm. I had to have it cut down. But I decided I wanted a memento from it and asked the tree surgeon to leave a tall stump, which he did - a good 6 feet high.

Every winter I spread birdseed on this stump, which gets kicked around by birds and squirrels alike, so that every summer there is a profusion of grasses and other little plants growing up around the roots and on the treestump itself. 

But the most wonderful thing - mirabile dictu! - is that the lovely old roots have put forth many shoots, which by now are small trees in their own right, growing up around the stump. 

Some of these have reached a respectable height of 25-30 feet or so and can truly be called young trees.

And in the early summer, they bloom profusely. Their small white blossoms attracting hordes of bees and butterflies and perfuming the air with their sensuous smell, adorn the branches. I relax in my gazebo under these branches, and breathe in this heady opulent scent.

Indeed, this hoary old basswood is my own local version of a phoenix, rising from its ashes.

This is a seque into a joyful announcement that In Plain View Winnipeg is also performing a  version of the phoenix story.
