Kevin Friedrich was born in Meadowlake Saskatchewan and attended his first 2 years of art school at Red Deer College before completing his BFA in painting at the U of M and making his permanent home in Winnipeg. Kevin’s work has been described as ‘Prairie Surrealism’ and includes an evolving repertoire of personal symbols and styles. Through many stylistic avenues, such as folk and absurdist, his paintings give rise to charismatically inconclusive statements that are engaging and highly thought provoking.

CULTURE IN PLAIN VIEW

In two weeks - from Sept. 30th to Oct. 2nd - all Canada will be celebrating Culture Days - a nation-wide celebration of the Arts.This is what it's all about here in Manitoba:
Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.
When is it? The last weekend of every September.
What is it? Three days of free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind the scenes,” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in their community.
Why? To showcase the arts in Manitoba and inspire more support and participation throughout the rest of the year. It is also a great opportunity for artists and arts groups to get exposure through our intense communications and public relations campaign and through our media partners.

The Phoenix In Plain View

Enjoying our wonderful, sadly brief summer outdoors on my deck, I watched butterflies cavorting. I think they were Painted Ladies. Probably also Painted Gentlemen, because there seemed to be some courting going on.

They seemed attracted, in addition to one another, to the blooming flowers on my rejuvenated basswood tree.

I've mentioned this tree before - it has a place of honour in my backyard and in my life. Once a gorgeous tall spreading wonder, it met with ill fate a few years ago in the shape of a windstorm. I had to have it cut down. But I decided I wanted a memento from it and asked the tree surgeon to leave a tall stump, which he did - a good 6 feet high.

Every winter I spread birdseed on this stump, which gets kicked around by birds and squirrels alike, so that every summer there is a profusion of grasses and other little plants growing up around the roots and on the treestump itself.

But the most wonderful thing - mirabile dictu! - is that the lovely old roots have put forth many shoots, which by now are small trees in their own right, growing up around the stump.

Some of these have reached a respectable height of 25-30 feet or so and can truly be called young trees.

And in the early summer, they bloom profusely. Their small white blossoms attracting hordes of bees and butterflies and perfuming the air with their sensuous smell, adorn the branches. I relax in my gazebo under these branches, and breathe in this heady opulent scent.

Indeed, this hoary old basswood is my own local version of a phoenix, rising from its ashes.

This is a seque into a joyful announcement that In Plain View Winnipeg is also performing a version of the phoenix story.

Karen Johannsson is hard at work here in Pat Courtnage's studio at 164 Langside at Sara.
Pat (in the background) generously offered Karen a place in her large studio after Karen lost working space in a fire at her house on Lenore St.
This has been a difficult time for Karen since the loss last year of her own well-known Lipton Street Studio, in which she worked and held classes for years.
We see Pat also at work here with Karen in the background, as she glazes a shoe for upcoming shows. (See Below).

They are both getting ready for the upcoming show at Wayne Arthur Gallery on Provencher which opens this coming Sunday, May 1st. And Pat is doing double duty, preparing for the Shoe Show in Kenora which opens next weekend.(see invitations below.)

Does the term "Starving Artists" present a false image of those who devote their lives to creativity? - NO WAY!!

Here are some interesting statistics recently published in the Globe and Mail:

Earnings by most Canadian artists are hovering at poverty levels and the situation is likely to worsen as the worldwide recession deepens, according to a statistical profile of the country's artists released yesterday.

The findings of the 43-page study, prepared by Hill Strategies Research of Hamilton for Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, are derived from the 2006 census. It identified 140,000 Canadians as artists – defined as those who spent most of their working time in nine occupational categories, including actors, dancers, authors/writers, visual artists and producers/directors/choreographers.

The study reports that artists over all are working for near-poverty-level wages, with an average annual earnings in calendar year 2005 of just $22,731, compared with $36,301 for all Canadian workers – a 37-per-cent wage chasm.

In fact, of the 140,000 artists analyzed, 43 per cent earned less than $10,000, whereas in the overall labour force that percentage was 25 per cent. The study notes that the $22,700 average is only 9 per cent higher than the $20,800 that Statistics Canada has identified as the “low-income cutoff” for a single person living in a city with 500,000 people or more.

What makes the situation even more distressing is that artist earnings have been decreasing since 1990 – a decline likely to intensify over the next two years.

According to the Hill study, the poorest-paid Canadian artist category is that of female visual artist, with average earnings in 2005 of $11,421, closely followed by female artisan/craftsperson ($12,307)

This 4 day workshop focuses on design and process for landscape in fused glass, as Roger Thomas from Portland Oregon will share his techniques and philosophy of his Glass Paintings. Roger is known to students of glass for his varied and unusual glass fusing techniques with which he creates his art. During this class the student will complete four landscape samples, as Roger discusses and demonstrates how he creates color, depth and translucency in his work. Students should have some glass cutting experience as well as having taken a beginner glass fusing course.

Mary Anne Rudy In Plain View

Mary Anne Rudy is one of the new artists opening her home studio during this upcoming tour. Mary Anne lives and works in Headingley. Mary Anne has the following to say about her work:

I am currently interested in creating mainly mixed media monotype prints that are generally abstract, but often include some realistic aspects such as flowers or landscapes. The first part of the print is created on a metal plate using rollers, brushes and other tools to develop and create patterns of all types. Blank and partially blank areas are left on the plate in order to allow for further development once the print is run. Once the print has been run, then it is worked back into with some type of realistic or semi abstract landscape or floral image. Other patterns and metallic embellishments are added as well. I am particularly fond of gold and silver leaf, so a great number of my paintings and prints incorporate the use of this material. Monotype printmaking of this type involving traditional and innovative techniques provides many opportunities for happy accidents as well as the grace to influence the finished product.

My most recent two person show at the Birchwood Art Gallery included fourteen larger acrylic canvasses, which were mainly semi-abstract landscapes and urban landscapes. The canvasses were fairly experimental and the semi abstract landscapes seemed to evoke past memories for places people had visited or lived and allowed people to place themselves into the painting in their own way.

As an Interior Designer, I began to produce watercolour paintings as a method for clients to visualize the interiors I was presenting to them. From this, developed the passion for painting and now my artwork is exclusively prepared for the enrichment of interior spaces. My influences are everything I see, feel and experience in the built and natural environment. My daily life involves architecture and interior spaces, therefore art pieces are created as pieces that enhance, and beautify, as well as provide a focal point for the interior environment in which they are placed, private or commercial. Explanation is generally not required, as it is my hope to evoke visual pleasure for the viewer without a right or wrong message. It is my intent to generate paintings that speak for themselves and allow the viewer to receive their own message. Throughout history, art as a means of beautification for our living and working environment has been considered a valid reason for the creation of art. My paintings are meant to delight and gratify the people who display them in their home or work surroundings. I would like to think my art is grounded in pleasure and aesthetics.

Recently four of my monotype prints have been selected to hang in Canada’s Official Residences in Rideau Hall in Ottawa and Citadel in Quebec City.

Cottonwoods in Plain View

My back yard has recently been looking a little like a winter scene. The ground and decks are covered in a fine dusting of white.

But it isn’t snow – it’s fluffy little seed parachutes from the cottonwood trees on the riverbank. They drift along on the breeze like little ghostly creatures, tumble along the ground and collect in white heaps in corners, catching on spider webs and giving the place that creepy Hallowe’enish look.
There is so much of the stuff, it leads me to wonder if the cottonwoods know something. Are they trying to proliferate their kind in a desperate bid to populate the earth with as many trees as they can? Is there a foreboding that the bank from which they grow will cave in and they will all fall into the river? The water is still so high that I worry about this too. Is the bank being eroded silently from underneath by the fast-flowing, abnormally high water?
The riverbank where I live changes thus from year to year. Parts of it have collapsed into the river and trees have been lost. On the other hand, following the annual spring flood, new river-mud has been deposited on top of the banks and so they build up again, with new young trees pushing up through the cracked river clay.

The river giveth and the river taketh away.

The Group of 8 Artist Salon has been meeting monthly since 2008. It is made up of 7 women artists, all of whom studied under Milos Milidrag. The eighth place is a virtual one, reserved for an invited guest to join the group for an evening.

Artists, Cats, and Other Things - In Plain View

My cats sometimes leave me offerings. I will occasionally find a poor little dead creature lying on my bedroom floor – sometimes in my bed!

There are times when the little thing is not quite dead, and times when it is very much alive, flying around the room, battering against the windows, trying to get out, or if a non-flying creature, running around desperatelly trying to hide in every nook and cranny.

If it’s still alive, I swing into action – close the door, grab a towel or a box, and race around trying to catch it before said cats do. All the while with the dogs sitting on the bed barking encouragement. I even have a butterfly net stashed in the corner of my bedroom for such occasions.

I usually manage to rescue these creatures: birds, mice, squirrels, even baby rabbits. If they are badly injured, the rescue includes a trip to the Humane Society or even out to the Wildlife Sanctuary in St. Adolph.

However, once I woke up and spotted two tiny creatures squirming around on the bedroom floor. Two tiny newborn mice. They were each about the size of a thimble, hairless and blind. And they were alive! Obviously the cats didn't know what to do with them.

I called the Humane Society and the Wildlife rescue people to no avail. They would have nothing to do with mice. Even my vet was no help. He could only offer to euthanize them. I felt that the gods had put these helpless creatures in my path and it was up to me to do something about it.

So I checked out the Internet and – of course- there were websites that told me what to do.

I went to the nearest pet store and bought some canned kitten milk, improvised a feeding bottle from an eyedropper and a rubber squeezebottle cap over a small metal dye applicator tip, and began a feeding regimen that consisted of feeding warmed kitten milk to these tiny things every 4 hours , day and night for the next two weeks.

Sadly, one of the mice didn’t make it, but Victoria did. When her eyes opened, I started her on adult mice food. She thrived. She especially liked oatmeal. And I bought her an aquarium to live in, with toys and a running tube made out of a flexible plastic duct tube actually intended to catch sawdust from a table saw.

Victoria lived for 2 and a half years. This is, apparently, a very long life for a wild mouse. She provided endless entertainment for my cats, needless to say. They would sit beside the aquarium for minutes on end, peering in at her, trying to convince her that they intended no harm. She was really their pet.

By the way, does anyone want an aquarium?

Artists' Studios In Plain View - Tour June 5&6

Auugghhh! It’s studio clean-up time again! Have to get ready for the next studio tour coming up next weekend, June 5&6. Believe it or not, some artists have declined to be included in these tours because they did not want the hassle of cleaning up their studios. At this point in time – I understand.

This is what my painting and clay studios look like right now. What a mess! So much to do - so little time!

Last Saturday I took some time off to go visit a bee colony. Looking at my messy studios reminds me of a look inside a beehive. It looks like total chaos. The difference, of course, being that the hive is controlled chaos. My studios, not so much.

Organizing these tours is also a little like trying to create order out of chaos. Dealing with so many artists, each of whom has a life with varying demands creates inevitable scheduling challenges.

Therefore there are some changes to look out for on this tour. Some artists cannot be involved and a couple of others will be located in different places, and we've added some new artists.

Here's the scoop:
Two new locations will be added to this tour -
Steve Jorgensen at 455 Churchill drive and Stoneware Gallery at 778 Corydon Ave. Check them out on our website: http://www.inplainviewwinnipeg.com/.
The following artists will not be available on this June tour: LeVerne Tucker, Kathleen Black, Larry Rich and Briony Haig

I have been part of a project at Good Neighbours Active Living Centre called "City of Trees, World of Trees".There were a series of storytelling workshops plus workshops in various art media. I of course did BATIK classes.People have asked that the Batik classes continue in the fall..If people are interested they should call Vanessa at Good Neighbours 669-1710. Following is a description of the proposed class.

Thursday from 1-2:30 pm

This is a traditional art class where a wax based method of dying cloth is used. There will be an example on display at the front reception area. Throughout the classes one on one instruction and the opportunity to execute different techniques will be applied. Crows in Plain View

These days I wake up in the morning to the noise of a “murder” of crows. That old English collective noun designating a flock of crows is more than apt.
Several crow families have chosen this part of the riverbank for their homes, and they let the world know where they live, vociferously and at great length, especially early in the morning.
They also have designated some of their number as outlooks – warning all and sundry about the approach of any cat or dog in the vicinity. In fact, I think they have decided that I, too, am a threat, cawing away whenever I step outside the back door.
Every once in a while they spot an aerial enemy, usually a traveling bird of prey - a hawk or an unwary owl, who has perched for the day in a branch of a tree on the riverbank, probably resting on its migratory route. Then the “murder” begins in earnest. The local crows call in all their nearby relatives and thus begins a cawing, screeching, campaign of terror. The flock surrounds the poor unfortunate creature, dive-bombing it, until they drive it off its perch into the air where they pursue it mercilessly, attempting to force it onto the ground, where they will peck it to death.

The first time I witnessed this tragic ritual, I had stepped out into the back yard, hearing an incredible cacophony of sound. Over the river flew a great, flapping black cloud of screaming crows. The cloud circled several times, and then turned and flew over me, and as I looked up at the phenomenon, I saw in the centre of this black swarm, a white face looking down at me with two great terrified eyes. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was a vision that I will always remember.
I realized after this strange image passed overhead, that the crows had flushed a snowy owl. The whole crowd swirled on down the river and disappeared from view. I hoped that the owl got away, but its chances of getting back to the north were probably pretty slim.
That image – the flying face – has sometimes shown up in my work.

Out and About, Yahoo!

It is action time for Pat Bragg who will be out and about, loving the spring, promoting and selling her photographs.

In addition to several commissions, she will be participating in the Mother’s Day Art Sale in Warren on May 8th and 9th, the Rendezvous Canada Uniquely Manitoba Gift Show at the Centennial Concert Hall on May 10th, the Wolseley Arts Festival, May 14 and 15, and of course the In Plain View Studio Tour on June 5 and 6. In July the Pine Ridge Hollow Market Garden starts up again and the River and Osborne Farmer’s Market on Thursday evenings. Pat will be at both of these venues off and on.

Pat’s latest works feature unique presentations of flowers, gardens and winter landscapes. She is also helping capture the essence of people in personal portraits.

She is looking for a full flax crop in bloom, hopefully next to a flowering canola crop this summer for a series of photographs she has in mind. If anyone notices this setting please give her a call at 254-1184 or email at patbragg@shaw.ca and she will dash out in the early morning to shoot. She has heard that flax crops may be scarce because there is an issue with our flax crops (overseas markets are not buying) so if anyone is growing flax, let her know!

Trees In Plain View

This is my favorite time of year. I love it when the small leaves on the trees create that soft green veil around the branches. Each tree looks like a primavera goddess – a true spring bride.

These lissome beings dance in the wind all along my riverbank, their limbs clothed in transparent green gauze.

It isn’t difficult to understand why the ancients believed that trees were inhabited by supernatural beings.

I have lots of trees in my yard. In fact I often say that I live in a small forest on Wolseley Ave.

Four years ago, I had to have my favorite tree cut down. It nearly broke my heart.

It was a huge basswood, towering over my house – taller than any other tree in Winnipeg, I think.

It had five large boles, each as great around as the trunks of individual elm trees growing along Wolseley. They all branched off from a huge trunk that must have been about 30 feet in circumference.

When the tree-cutters came I asked them to leave a high stump. So there it stands, an altar to treedom – 6 feet high and 25 feet around.

The wonderful thing is that it is still alive! It has produced several young trees from suckers, ringing it round and two of them have reached a height of 20 feet or more. Last year they managed to produce flowers and I look forward to even more this spring. I have missed the heavenly smell of basswood flowers in my back yard since the big one was cut down. I will enjoy them again, as well as the low hum of bees in the branches, They probably travelled miles to harvest the nectar.

3 Beautiful Weimeraner Dogs Looking For a Home

A friend of a friend is looking for a home for these three beautiful dogs (weimeraners). She's moving west and isn't able to take them with her and if she can't find homes for them, will be forced to consider euthanasia. It is breaking her heart and I want to do all that I can to help.

The three dogs are:
3 year old female (blue)
9 month old male (blue)
4 year old male (grey)
All are neutered/spayed and have been well cared for. The three dogs are all crate/house trained, well mannered. She takes them to the dog park and walks them all together - in one hand! :)

This evening I walked my dogs wearing only a sweater over my clothes. This in early Aptil - mirabile dictu!.
A benign, mellow evening worthy of early June.
Later on tonight, I'll continue to imbibe the soft spring air, sitting out on the deck behind my studio and listening to the dark, swollen Assiniboine River rush by. Last night I heard the small tinkling bells of the breaking ice as it jostled and pushed its way eastwards. Tonight the river waters are free of ice and flow swiftly and purposefully onwards.
I might be joined by some curious but cautious racoons. I have seen them luxuriously reclining on the lounge chair on my studio deck. And a couple of nights ago I spotted a couple in amorous foreplay.
Perhaps even the local red fox might prowl by, if I am quiet enough. He came into the yard about three weeks ago, presaged by his otherworldly cry - sounding like a lost soul, searching for its mate. Perhaps he was.

There was an ice jam on the river this past weekend, and it left fascinating piles of ice which remain on the bank. They remind me of Jolanta Sokalska's glass work.

I visited Jolanta and her husband Zbigniew in their studio this past week and found them working on a commissioned stained glass project which was a collaboration with students in a school in South Winnipeg and will grace the halls of that school.

Our Aliza Amihude showed another facet of her art-personality last Sunday evening, when she joined the artists and performers at the annual Girls! Girls! Girls! revue at the Gas Station Theatre. This year's show focused on the word Rapture, and it was fun to see the many interpretations of this word in song, dance, comedic routine, acrobatics, paintings, sculpture and all kinds of mixed media - 2D, 3D, and theatrical.

Aliza appeared in a wonderful red hand-dyed gown, looking for all the world like a priestess from another time. She sang, a capella, a mystical song from Yemen, accompanying herself on a small hand-held drum.

In the lobby gallery, she also presented a sulptural pun "Raptor Rapture: What REALLY happened to the Dinosaurs".

Ann Tyre and Carol James will be talking about their experiences surrounding the 2009 Biennale of Fine Craft in Cheongju Korea. This Salon Evening is hosted by the Manitoba Craft Museum and Library and the Manitoba Crafts Council. Ann has also informed us about a movement that is occurring in Great Britain and gaining attention not only there, but also here in North America.

The rallying cry for this movement is: CRAFT MATTERS!

Craft Matters was launched by the UK Crafts Council in October 2009 to encourage people to stand up and be counted as supporters of contemporary craft and tell us why it is important to them. "We know there is great support for craft in the UK with 11% of the population visiting a craft exhibition and 17% participating in a craft activity in 2008/09 (Taking Part survey*) and we want to give those people – and others – the chance to share their individual passion for craft."

The website states: "We know that 17% of the population takes part in a craft activity each year. Craft Matters is an initiative to show this support in a visually exciting way, to demonstrate the enthusiasm and passion contained in that 17% and to convey what craft means to millions of people. At the Crafts Council, we believe that craft plays a dynamic and vigorous role in the UK's social, economic, educational and cultural life, and that everyone should have the opportunity to make, see, collect and learn about why craft matters."

I looked up the word “artist” in Wikipedia recently and here is what it says:

‘The definition of an artist is wide-ranging and covers a broad spectrum of activities to do with creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art…. A person who creates art. A person who creates art as an occupation. A person who is skilled at some activity.

Quite a few very famous artists were mentioned, such as Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock and Kandinsky.

There were no artists from Winnipeg, though. But take heart – there’s still time. And meanwhile just so you won’t get too upset about this, we would like you to know that there ARE artists in Winnipeg. Lots of them. In fact some artists may be your neighbours, perhaps even your friends. Like us!

Artists In Plain View are your neighbours and friends and would like to get to know you and have you know us, too.

We’re getting serious about our place here in your midst. Guy Maddin missed pointing us out, but Winnipeg is fairly crawling with artists. We’d like you to know we’re here and that you will be invited yet again soon to visit us in our homes, and studios. Our next tour will be coming up in June, and this is not too early to mark your calendar – June 5 & 6.

In fact you don’t have to wait till then, because if you need that perfect, unique gift for someone’s birthday or wedding, all you have to do is contact your favourite In Plain View artist and make an appointment to come to his/her studio to look at the work. Our phone numbers are all listed on the website: www.inplainviewwinnipeg.com. And each artist who welcomes visits at times other than tour dates tells you so on his/her page.

And this brings me to another message. We have a new artist who has joined In Plain View. Steve Jorgensen will soon have a page on our website (just as soon as I wake up our webmaster). Steve is a master potter and produces wonderful functional pieces, as well as ceramic sculptures. In fact, I have some of Steve’s work, as do many Manitobans with Great Taste. I’ve posted pics of Steve’s work as well as Steve, himself, above.

Encountered Souls, Artist Statement
In all of our travels we encounter souls, we hear of Old Souls, Lost Souls, Enchanted Souls and Searching Souls. All these are representative of something beyond us, which I feel a need to connect with.
If we take the time to look and listen we can find out what comprises the world we live in both materialistically but mostly spiritually. With my work I strive to capture something outside myself and thusly find out more about who I am and those around me.
My current work revolves around the found object and abstracted impressions. By collecting objects and images I feel that I am piecing together an understanding of all the overlapping slices of time and place. I Imagine scenarios and try to give identities to the ideas spawned by various writings conversations and instances that comprise my existence.

In Plain View artist Gloria De Neve invites you to the opening of her show, (partnering with Gina Roth) at IPV gallery: Wayne Arthur Gallery, this Sunday, October 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. The show will continue until October 28.

Gloria is part of the In Plain View Winnipeg artists' studio tours that are coming up soon. These are self-guided tours to 30 artists' studios and galleries that feature their work. The Manitoba Crafts Council opened its annual juried show, "Culture-Counterculture", at Outworks Gallery this past Thursday evening, Sept. 17. It's a great show and worth a visit or two. Doug Melnyk, speaking for the jury, said about the entries: "Overall, we were faced with a wide variety of creative processes that blurred the lines between art and craft. Many pieces were excellent in terms of technical considerations, but the nicer surprise was the large number which were so personally expressive and so wildly experimental."

The work of four artists from In Plain View were selected for this show -

Aliza Amidude's mixed media book: "I've Often Thought About Killing Myself"

Kathleen Black's pate de verre bowl "Flowering Steel Cannikin"

Jolanta Kieres Solkaska's glass and metal piece "Emotions"

Jo'Anne Kelly's ceramic and painted silk wall piece "Goth Medusa".

The show continues at Outworks until Sept. 29. Following that, the exhibition will travel to Neepawa at the Viscount Cultural Centre for the month of October.

Katharine says about her work:

The mode of discipline that I work with involves a substantial collaboration with chance which relies upon an alertness to unintended consequences. The sudden appearance of unforseen possibilities, in the meantime, requires a constitutional capacity to function within a certain degree of chaos. If I approach a canvas with what might appear a nonchalant anything goes disposition, it is with the same humility one brings to contemplating visual experience in the natural world. The requisite inner gesture is a sort of stepping out of the way in order to let something happen. There is the intuitive, dreamy quality of an otherworldly realm and, at the same time--here and nowness. Nature is the over riding motivation for my ART.

Nancy Blokland is a potter based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Making pottery is a life long passion for her, as the process is therapeutic and endlessly interesting. Producing stoneware and porcelain functional ware, from mugs to soup tureens, to vases, she is heavily influenced by her time spent in Latin America. The botanical impressions from her garden and vibrant colors reflect this. ARTIST IN PLAIN VIEW - LARRY RICH

Whether abstract or representational, my work in acrylic has evolved from the visual perfectionism of Graphic Design to something more raw, simple, visceral and very personal.
Eastern Philosophy has always intrigued and mystified me. This combined with my long history as a musician gives me an appreciation of the value of simplicity and space and how it contrasts and balances with the bold colours, objects and sounds that define it.
My influences include all those that celebrate the simple beauty of space. British filmaker David Lean with his sparse yet epic visual feast Lawrence of Arabia. American composer John Cage with his Zen influenced silent composition 4' 33''. Photographer Willliam Claxton and his raw simple images that capture the complexity and nuance of American Jazz.
Producing art, for me, is about trying to capture and define the energy contained in space, like an atom, vast in space, yet massive in energy. This energy is held and defined by the perfect balance of object, colour and space in a set frame - a defined space in balance. Picasso's work and traditional Eastern Art has a strong sense of this.
For me, on a personal level, it is reflected in my personal mantra , " Music is the dance of my soul, Art is its reflection, Silence and solitude its refuge ''.

Pat Bragg has had a long time love of photography and during a recent trip to Europe found her eyes sharpened by the light, the amazing textures in nature and historical structures, and the sheer exuberance of Italy.

This translated into a new appreciation for the details of life closer to home: neighbourhood gardens, prairie scenes, and our own Manitoba light and colour.

Her original works are available in several formats including framed, matted, and greeting cards and can be custom ordered in a size to fit your mood or your rooms.

New Artist in Plain View: LeVerne Tucker

Glass artist and jewelry designer LeVerne Tucker offers a distinctive collection of jewelry and objects crafted from flame-worked glass. LeVerne utilizes precious metal clay in silver and bronze to create unique pieces such as pendants, toggles and organic shapes, which are incorporated into her designs.
Recent work includes her signature hollow beads, as well as glass blowing techniques used to form hollow witch balls and fairy balls.
A small selection of jewelry and trinket boxes featuring flame-worked glass accents, metal clay and found objects will also be offered.

LeVerne can be found at 420 Ritchot Street, Winnipeg during the In Plain View Artists' Studio Tour on the first weekend in December 2009 and in June 2010, However she will be at 717 Charleswood Road for the tour on the first weekend of November. A New Artist In Plain View - Gloria De Neve

Gloria De Neve was born in Green Bay, Manitoba . She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba, followed by studies with the British Craftsman Association in England and Wales.

Gloria says about her work:

My imagery balances the tension in the fragility and vulnerability of the physical body ...... with the quiet timelessness and strength of the human spirit.

I use the human body as my imagery, to explore this balance and tension. As each person's lifetime is journeyed, the evolution of the soul is etched in one's own "Spirit Shield", which never dies, which carries on from one lifetime to another. My Raku forms have evolved into expressions of the Spirit Shield, and the search for these higher truths.

My work reflects this search within the sculptural and embellishment possibilities found in both Raku clay and hand-painted, manipulated silk fibre. Both mediums offer a similar tactile process of touch and movement.

Gloria and artist, Gina Roth ( from Hillside Beach ), will be having an upcoming show of their recent work at the Wayne Arthur Gallery ( 186 Provencher Blvd., Winnipeg ).

The exhibition, "Life's Journeys", runs from October 4th - 28th, with the Artist Reception on October 4th, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.
